Keeping our buildings clean: managing pigeons

News

Some residents have let us know that pigeons and the mess they have left behind is causing an inconvenience. This is a common issue for all urban homes. We want to let you know what we can do to help tackle this.

Challenges

The legal routes we have available to deter pigeons from settling on our buildings are very limited and the issue is challenging for all building owners.

For example, we are unable to use any deterrents or solutions that may cause harm to birds, such as poisoning or netting.

Urban pigeons have become acclimatised to co-existing with human beings and as a result, other methods like trained birds of prey are not effective as a long-term scare deterrent.

What we can do

When pigeon mess in communal areas is reported to us or found, we arrange for it to be cleaned safely and promptly.  Our cleaning contractor attends three times a week in your building and will clear any accumulation of mess found in communal areas.

Our approach includes:

Inspections via routine visits during which we can identify issues with pigeons:

  • Communal area cleaning - three times a week

  • Grounds maintenance visits - once every fortnight

  • Estate inspections - twice a week

Follow up for issues identified:

  • Safe removal and cleaning of pigeon mess in communal areas in line with health and safety guidance

New legislation is coming in that we are closely monitoring which will hopefully provide useful guidance on any further actions we can take.

What you can do to help

Pigeons may be a part of urban life, but there are practical ways to make your balcony or window ledge less inviting to them. This will not harm the birds but can make a real difference in reducing where they choose to settle.

Do not feed pigeons

Feeding pigeons, even unintentionally by leaving food waste or bird seed out, is the main reasons they gather in urban areas. Do not leave food on balconies or window ledges, and keep bins securely closed. Do not leave out bird feed.  If you see someone encouraging pigeons in this way please let us know via our online form:  Report it online

Keep your balcony tidy

Pigeons are attracted to areas where they feel sheltered and undisturbed. Keeping your balcony clear of clutter, plant pots, and stored items reduces the number of places where pigeons can nest or roost.

Tell us about a problem

Please tell us if you notice a build-up of pigeon mess in a communal area, for example, external walkways. Your reports help us to respond quickly.  If we can keep on top of any problems we can prevent anything more serious.

Please include as much detail as you can. We will follow up as quickly as possible.
