Domestic rubbish – keeping your estate clean and tidy
Reside is taking steps to help resolve the current problem with domestic rubbish and waste in some neighbourhoods. As you know, rubbish collection is a service provided by the local authority. This is the case throughout the United Kingdom, and it is no different in our borough.
What has gone wrong with rubbish?
We are experiencing an unwanted build-up of rubbish in some neighbourhoods, mostly in the vicinity of the URS, the underground bin system. We know that many residents are, quite rightly, upset by this.
A combination of mechanical breakdown and operational issues means that several collections have been missed. This has caused an accumulation of rubbish that has further hampered the efficient management of domestic waste.
A local government service
We are pleased to report that the department responsible has prioritised the repair of the specialist equipment needed to operate the URS bins.
We know that litter and abandoned waste are priority issues for you. We have been assured that the council takes this very seriously and is working hard to take action against people who deliberately litter your neighbourhood.
What can you do to help your neigbourhood stay tidy.
Failing to dispose of domestic rubbish properly can lead to charges for fly-tipping. It is essential that rubbish is put into the special bins provided. This means using the correct refuse sacks and making sure the bags are dropped into the URS chutes.

How to use the URS bins
We have noticed that some issues with waste build up around the URS bin chutes are caused by blocked access to the bins. Please don’t block up the bin access chutes with oversized bags.
Using the correct bags will make putting the rubbish out easier and keep your neighbourhood clean and tidy.
Bulky waste management: some do’s and don’ts
Disposing of your larger household items correctly is important.
The rules for disposing of larger items are easy to follow.
Please do not fly-tip. Together, we can all do rubbish better.
- You can book bulky waste disposal via the council. Details for how to do that are here: https://www.lbbd.gov.uk/rubbish-recycling/bulky-waste-collection/
- As well as booking a disposal service, the council lists other options for dealing with your larger items on their website. https://www.lbbd.gov.uk/rubbish-recycling/bulky-waste-collection/
- Do not leave your bulky waste items in the bin stores – follow the council’s instructions for how to prepare your items for collection. https://www.lbbd.gov.uk/rubbish-recycling/bulky-waste-collection/preparing-your-bulky-items-collection
- You can take larger items to your nearest recycling centre for free. Find your nearest centre here: https://www.lbbd.gov.uk/rubbish-recycling/recycling-centres
We will write to all of our residents separately about booking rubbish and waste collections before the Christmas and New Year holidays, when a lot of people often have extra rubbish.
