Celebrating safely this autumn

B&D Reside Communications Team

Blog

As we approach Diwali and Bonfire Night, it’s important to stay alert to fire safety both inside your home and around your building. Many fires start from simple oversights, so taking a few precautions now helps protect you, your neighbours, and your community.

This article outlines key fire safety rules and guidance for all residents. Please read and follow this information carefully.

Diwali and Bonfire Night

To keep everyone safe, fireworks, sparklers, and open flames are not permitted inside homes or anywhere on our estates. These items can cause serious injury and damage to property.

Please enjoy public firework displays organised by local councils or community groups instead. Click the links to find public Diwali and Bonfire Night events near you.

If you see anyone using prohibited firework products anywhere on the estate, please report it to buildingsafety@bdreside.co.uk for the appropriate team to manage.

Decorations and lighting

This time of year often brings festive decorations, but please make sure any items you use are safe and suitable for your home:

  • Only buy fairy lights and electrical decorations that carry the UKCA or CE safety mark. Unregistered or imitation products can overheat and cause fires, and are not allowed in any B&D Reside properties.
  • Avoid wreaths, doormats or hanging decorations on front doors and in communal areas. These can obstruct escape routes or spread fire quickly.
  • Keep hallways, stairwells, and exits completely clear at all times.

At home and on balconies

  • Never use candles, disposable barbecues or firepits indoors or on balconies. Even small flames can start fires that spread rapidly in enclosed or shared spaces.
  • Always switch off decorative lights and electrical appliances before leaving your home or going to bed.
  • Do not cover heaters or leave items too close to radiators or heat sources.

Simple steps to stay safe

  • Test your smoke alarms weekly and report any faults immediately.
  • Keep your kitchen area tidy and never leave cooking unattended.
  • Make sure you and your household know your building’s evacuation route.

Safe alternatives and ways to celebrate

You can still bring a seasonal touch to your home while staying fire-safe:

  • Use battery-powered candles or LED tea lights for warm, flickering light without open flames.
  • Hang paper or fabric decorations inside your home, away from heaters and lights.
  • Choose door signs or name plaques made of non-flammable materials that sit flush to the door (no hanging items or bulky wreaths).
  • Attend a public fireworks display organised by your local council or community group rather than lighting fireworks yourself. These events are safely managed and family-friendly.

Your cooperation helps keep your buildings safe and comfortable for everyone who lives in them. Thank you for taking these steps to reduce fire risks this autumn.
