Be E-Aware: e-bikes, e-scooter and lithium battery safety at B&D Reside buildings

Blog

The safety of everyone who lives in and visits our buildings is our priority. While e-bikes, e-scooters and their batteries offer a convenient way to travel, they can present a serious fire risk if they are damaged, incorrectly charged, poorly maintained or stored in unsuitable locations.

To help keep our buildings safe, we ask residents not to store, charge or leave e-bikes, e-scooters or their batteries in any communal areas, including corridors, stairwells, entrances, lobbies, bin stores and shared walkways. These areas form vital escape routes and must be kept clear at all times.

Charge safe

  • Safe homes need clear exits: In your home, always charge in a safe place without blocking exits and always unplug your charger when you have finished chargin
  • Not all e-bikes and e-scooter batteries and chargers are compatible or safe when used together. Check and only use the manufacturers recommended battery and charger.
  • Do not charge overnight or unattended.
  • Charge in an area with working, regularly serviced smoke alarms.

Store safe

  •  It is vital that you have a smoke alarm in the area where you keep or charge your e-vehicle or lithium batteries in your home. You can get a free alarm from the London Fire Brigade.
  • Check batteries regularly to make sure they are in good condition – they can be dangerous if they have been damaged.
  • Keep batteries out of sunlight and store somewhere cool, especially on hot days.

Ride safe

  • Use e-bikes and e-bikes outdoors only.
  • Don’t drop and dump: Whether you are using your own e-bike or scooter or if you’ve rented one, please do not leave rented items outside building entrances, in communal areas, or on escape routes.
  • Park rented e-bikes and scooters properly - away from exits and upright.
